Kim and Mike: Gardens Arbor Wedding and Gardens Vista Reception

Date: Friday, May 15, 2009 Bride: Kim Azcarraga
Hall: The Gardens of Park Hills Arbor & Vista Rooms Groom: Mike Fightmaster

How did the two of you meet?

We met in college at Cincinnati Christian University.

How did the proposal take place?

Mike proposed in Manchester, Massachusetts at a beach called the Singing Beach. It was quiet and romantic and totally our personality. He first started by explaining that he was so excited about getting ready to start a new chapter in our lives together in Massachusetts, because we both moved there to go to graduate school, and that in the future we would be able to return to the Singing Beach many times while we lived there, then, he drew a question mark in the sand with his toe while he was talking (and I was not looking) and then he popped the question!

In what ways have you prepared to make your wedding day unique and special to the two of you?

We both LOVE music and so that was a really important part of the ceremony. I wanted the song that I walked down the aisle to be a surprise for Mike and something that was really meaningful. It was also really important for us to have our closest friends and family involved in the planning and the wedding itself and to honor those family members who have passed away at the wedding. For instance, I have my grandfather’s lucky coin and I will be carrying that in my bouquet the day of the wedding.

What has been the most challenging experience throughout this process and do you have any advice for future brides?

I think the most challenging part is the temptation to feel like you have to please everyone, when the day is really about the two of you. My advice would be to try to remind yourself that people are going to be happy to celebrate with you no matter what, and that it’s not about some big production, it is about celebrating a past, present, and future with the person you are marrying.

How did you go about selecting your vendors?

Mostly, by word of mouth. We found out about our cake lady through family, our D.J. through a friend, and our photographer was someone my mother knew.
