History of McHale's Catering

1950’s
Charles McHale Sr. (Charles) began the family business when he opened M&W Market, which was located at Madison and Wallace in Covington, Kentucky.

1965
After graduating from the Toledo School of Meat Cutting, Charles McHale Jr. (Charlie) became the second grocer in his family when he opened Junior’s Food Market, which was located at 4010 Decoursey Avenue in Covington, Kentucky. Charlie also expanded the business to include freshly-cut meat.

1967
Charlie moved the Decoursey Avenue store to a brand new building on Winston Avenue in Latonia, Kentucky. Charlie also grew the family business by opening a new store at 6417 Dixie Highway in Florence, Kentucky. To better emphasize its service of providing freshly-cut meat, he also renamed the business McHale’s Meats.

Starting in 1965 McHales Meat MarketMay, 1976
Once again, Charlie grows the family business by opening a new store at 1949 Dixie Highway in Ft. Wright, Kentucky. He also expanded the business by adding a deli and catering services.

1986
After 21 years in the grocery business, Charlie reached record sales of $7 million. Unfortunately, 1986 was also the year that Charlie McHale passed away leaving the business to his wife, Mary McHale. Due to family responsibilities, Mary turns over management of the family business to Charles McHale III (Chuck).

January, 1990
Due to changes in the retail industry, Mary McHale sells the family business to Remke Markets. Ten months later, Chuck purchases the Florence store back from Remke Markets. It is at this time that Chuck’s focus began to change from the retail food industry to the off-premise catering industry. From 1991 to 1998, as retail sales declined, catering sales increased and more than made up the difference.

November, 1998
Chuck sold the last retail store and moved his off-premise catering business to a brand new 2000 square foot industrial kitchen in Wilder, Kentucky which was equipped to handle catering services for over 3000 guests per day.
